Freeride is a hybrid of XC and DH riding. It is a discipline for advanced riders as it combines the usual climbing and descending with obstacles, stunts, jumps, drops and technical moves.
Freeride is held on trails where a wide variety of challenges can be provided. Since it is a form of technical riding, it requires specific bike-handling skills and techniques. Competitors are given points by judges based on their ability to overcome obstacles. In urban areas, freeride also involves rampages and halfpipe which provide more of an extreme element to this already spectacular discipline.
It also requires bikes specific to the sport, and these tend to be all-rounders. Freeride bikes have dual suspension with less weight and travel than a DH Bike. They can take on dangerous and technical downhill trails but not as quickly or effectively as a DH specific bike. Compared to XC bikes, Freeride bikes tend to have more suspension travel and are built from stronger, heavier materials. They are able to cross distances but not as quickly or efficiently as an XC bike.
