The more spectacular and adrenaline-fueled disciplines of MTBing, it is a very exciting sport. DH riding is about going downhill as fast as possible and fulfils the need for speed of many riders.
DH courses are typically very challenging and require a great deal of skill, concentration and courage. In DH racing involving timed runs, the faster of two runs is recorded as the official time. The first run is used as a qualifier to determine starting positions and the slower riders go first. Races are usually won by milliseconds
DH riding is only for those who like an adrenaline rush! It involves some very high speeds and has an element of danger. This danger is reduced by the wearing of compulsory protective body armour and pads, full-faced helmets and full-finger gloves. DH bikes are also specifically designed for this style of riding with all parts specialised to some degree. DH bikes have full-suspension with longer travel to better ride over rocky terrain. Disc brakes have increased stopping force and frames are very strong. DH bikes are heavy at around 17-18kgs and in most cases, only suitable only for downhill trails.
